Pembrokeshire has a rich history involving links to war, piracy and the Tudor monarchy with a colourful collection of noteworthy people and industries which have each helped to shape our county. Take a look back through Pembrokeshire’s intriguing local history at one of our fantastic museums.

Haverfordwest Town Museum documents the history of one of Pembrokeshire’s most central towns across nearly the last thousand years. The museum displays religious artefacts from the local parish churches and chapels, historical items showcase popular past industries whilst pictures illustrate the transformation of the castle. You can also learn about the development of the town with the arrival of the railway and important individuals who helped to shape the town.

Fishguard is famous for being the place where the last invasion took place and so the Town Hall is home to the Last Invasion Tapestry Gallery where you can see a commemorative handmade 100ft long tapestry. Commissioned 200 years after the invasion of 1797, the tapestry tells the true story of the French invasion with the help of storyboards and more.

Take a trip back to the Victorian era with a visit to Scolton Manor Museum. Built-in 1842 by local architects, this Manor House has been home to generations of the Higgons family (members of whom became county Sheriffs) as well as being used as a hospital during WWII. Since then, the house has been restored to demonstrate Victorian life with an accompanying Visitor Centre, Sculpture Trail, restored Walled Garden and grounds of the Country Estate open to explore.

Located on Castle Hill with views across sandy beaches and Caldey Island, Tenby Town Museum & Gallery displays the history of Tenby and South Pembrokeshire covering the local maritime and social history. The museum presents a range of historical and interesting objects alongside changing exhibitions in the gallery and interactive activities for children.

Chapel Bay Fort & Museum is situated in a serene area of Pembrokeshire and displays a military history of the area with weaponry and tools on show. With an optional guided tour, an on-site café serving refreshments and a fantastic location just minutes away from the Coastal Path and West Angle beach; this is a great way to spend an hour or two. This museum is open Easter to October only.
